Position Summary

Learn English and Reading Now, Inc., a community-based adult literacy organization in Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro, VA, seeks a Tutoring Coordinator. In collaboration with other staff, the coordinator communicates fluently in English and Spanish with enrolling and current learners and volunteer tutors, and performs duties that maximize learning, retention and growth.

Job Description:

The Tutoring Coordinator contacts all potential learners and schedule and conducts an intake meeting which will include gathering information and administering placement assessments. The coordinator attends tutor training events. In collaboration with other staff, the coordinator matches and then introduces tutors and learners to each other. S/he provides on-going support and regular communication with tutors and learners, always maintaining accurate records.


Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Maintains and communicates on the organization’s dedicated telephone line with potential and current Spanish speaking learners

  • Schedules meetings and meets with all potential learners, not just Spanish speakers, to complete intake procedure and placement assessment

  • Serves on the team led by the Executive Director that determines tutor-learner matches. Attends a session of each Tutor Training

  • Schedules and convenes all meetings to introduce tutors and learners, and to organize and confirm the match

  • Serves as a liaison between staff and tutors and Spanish speaking learners if need arises

  • Calls Spanish speaking learners and advanced English speakers on predetermined frequency to learn how tutoring is going, their concerns and challenges, and additional successes to celebrate

  • Works with staff, led by the Executive Director, to troubleshoot and seek solutions for learners having difficulty meeting expectations such as regular attendance

  • Meets and communicates regularly with Executive Director, Administrative Assistant and, when requested, Program Committee

  • Keeps accurate records of all contacts and passes on information and materials to Administrative Assistant for office record keeping                                            

  • Might represent the organization in outreach efforts where a Spanish speaker is helpful


  • Fluency in verbal English and Spanish

  • High School diploma

  • Ability to work with a flexible schedule

  • Skilled in use of Microsoft Office and Adobe

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work and communicate effectively with multiple partners, including learners from many countries, tutors, staff, and board members

  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and be dependable

  • Ability to work on a team, collaborate with teammates and volunteers, and contribute to a positive work culture.

  • Strong organizational skills, and proficiency in scheduling appointments and meetings

  • Strong customer service/support skills

  • A fast learner who has excellent attention to detail


 Flexible, varying, averaging 15 hours a week.  Some early evening hours.



Hybrid.  Typically, home, LEARN ENGLISH office in Fishersville and various public locations such as libraries. Some work on Zoom or other platforms possible.
