Position Summary:

  • Learn English and Reading Now, Inc. (LEARN English) is an adult literacy, volunteer organization that provides free one-on-one, confidential tutoring in basic literacy and English as a second language to adults living in the Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro areas.

  • Our mission is to increase opportunities for adults in our community through instruction in English language and literacy.

  • Our vision is that all motivated adults in our community have sufficient English language skills to improve their lives. 

Title: Executive Director

  • Supervisor: The Executive Director of Learn English and Reading Now, Inc. reports to a Board of Directors.

  • Location: The LEARN English office is located at 49 Hornet Road inside the Adult Learning Center in Fishersville, Virginia.

  • Job Type: Part-Time - 25 hours/week

  • Scheduling: This is a part-time position requiring an average of approximately 25 hours per week. Anticipated schedule to include: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 10 am - 3 pm and Thursday 3 pm - 8 pm with five unscheduled hours to be utilized throughout the week to complete duties or attend meetings.

  • Compensation: The annual salary for the Executive Director is $26,000 and includes 22 paid Augusta County Calendar holidays. This amount is subject to reduction to reflect applicable withholding and payroll taxes and other deductions required by law.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a welcoming, helpful first impression in the office. Greet visitors, field telephone calls, mail, and e-mail. Respond to public questions and concerns regarding the community-based tutor program.

  • Develop and maintain key relationships with school administration where the LEARN office is located.

  • Organize and confirm matches between tutors and learners.

  • Attend all board and committee meetings after hours.

  • Collaborate with the LEARN Board of Directors in strategic planning, annual fundraising, and development of the organization’s operating budget.

  • Collect, organize data, and prepare information required for reports, presentations, and grant writing.

  • Maintain financial records for the organization in partnership with the LEARN Treasurer.

  • Recruit, train, and manage key staff members/volunteers in support of the annual strategic and fundraising plans.

  • Monitor monthly attendance sheets for learners and monitor opportunities for post-testing. Create student transcripts/certificates as needed.

  • Develop key performance metrics to evaluate success of programs and to drive leadership and collaboration with Adult Education Site.

  • Make referrals to appropriate community agencies and organizations.

  • Attend professional development activities as required. Become a member of Virginia Association of Adult and Continuing Education (VAACE).

  • Serve as a resource for problem solving, student issues, community relations, and training.

  • Collaborate with key community stakeholders to expand site offerings.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree desirable.

  • Relevant background and experience in literacy.

  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability in program management.

  • Excellent written (e.g., grant applications and reports) and computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Office and Adobe.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work and communicate effectively with multiple partners, including learners from many countries, tutors, and board members
